Defenceman Jordie Benn has sleeve tattoos on both his arms. The first tattoo Benn got were the words “Never Quit.” Benn and his brother, Jamie, heard those words often from their father and grandfather while growing up in Victoria, B.C. Both boys made it to the NHL and Jamie is now captain of the Dallas Stars.
Benn said in an interview last season that the tattoo that means the most to him is the one on his right arm that reads “Papa — 1924-2014” — in honour of his late grandfather.

“They say getting tattoos is addictive — and it is, ” Benn said. “You get one and it hurts and then once it’s done you’re like: ‘Maybe I won’t get any more.’ But then you give it a couple of months and you get the itch again.”
“When people ask me how many tattoos I have, I can’t say how many, ” Deslauriers, who has sleeve tattoos on both arms and much more ink on other parts of his body, said after a practice last season. “It’s a lot. I think maybe it’s a way I express myself, just getting inked up. Sometimes maybe it looks bad-ass, like people say, but it’s the way I express myself with meaningful things to put on my body.”
Deslauriers said the tattoo that means the most to him is the one on his left arm that reads: “The future will be whatever you make it.” Those are the words his grandmother would always tell him as a young boy growing up in in Saint-Anicet.
Couple Carve A Niche Creating And Erasing Tattoos
The future is looking pretty good for Deslauriers now after signing a two-year, US$1.9-million contract that kicks in next season after he scored a career-high 10 goals last season and added four assists in 58 games. Deslaurier’s wife, Joanie, is also pregnant with their third child.
Nikita Scherbak is another Canadiens player with plenty of tattoos on his body, including one with the date the Canadiens drafted him and another with the date of his first NHL goal.

Owners Mikey Rose and Dave Lechasseur come from punk culture and good punks that they are, they know it’s all about tearing down the walls.

“The concept was to open a place that we could call home, ” Rose said. “We just want to work with our own people and our own clients and not have to answer to any social standards, either music-wise or trends-wise. Just be ourselves 100 per cent and make people comfortable about being themselves.”

When they began thinking about doing this in the spring of 2018, they wanted to create a place where anyone from any walk of life would be able to hang out. It opened in June 2018.

Rose, Lechasseur and the third barber, Willy B. Goode, cut guys’ hair in the front, with an emphasis on old-school cuts. In the back, behind a large window, there’s the tattoo parlour headed up by tattoo artist Yann Drolet. For Rose and Lechasseur, who each have no shortage of tattoos, the combination of barbershop and tattoo salon was a natural.

“The two actually came together historically, ” Rose said. “When sailors would dock in, they’d go to barbershops and that’s where they’d get their tattoos done. They’ve always been intertwined.”
They both spent some serious time hanging out in tattoo parlours, skate shops and punk bars. The two, who didn’t know each other at the time, began cutting hair professionally four or five years ago. Lechasseur was paying his barber dues at Chez Le Barbier on Ontario St. E. and Rose was cutting hair at Scotch & Scissors on Van Horne Ave. in Outremont.

There has been a new style of barbershop culture exploding all over the globe: punk/alt rock-fuelled haircutting shops for all the people — like Lechasseur and Rose — who were turned off by the traditional hairdressing salons and were fed up with the old-fashioned Italian-style barbershops.
“We might look like punk-rock guys, but most of my clients are lawyers, engineers, doctors, and these guys are all fans of punk rock and rock music, ” Rose said. “They enjoy coming here and being able to talk about music and shoot the shit. We want to break the stereotype of, ‘Oh, these guys look like bad guys.’ One of our clients who comes here with his kids, his son said, ‘They look tough, but they’re really, really nice guys’.”
One of Rose’s regular clients is a high-profile lawyer who has seen everyone from the Beastie Boys to the Bad Brains, but he comes dressed ready for the courtroom.

“You’d never guess that his desert-island album, the one that he’d bring for life, is the first album by the Bad Brains, ” Rose said.
Added Lechasseur: “That’s what brings people to the barbershop. Everyone wants to get under the cape. You don’t see social status or anything like that. It’s just conversation. You get to be deep with people and connect.”
Last summer, an executive who runs a happening company sat down outside with three hardcore street punks and they talked for an hour-and-a-half.
